When it comes to helping others pursue God, more important than any skill or experience is the attitude of dependence on Jesus Christ.
John 15:4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
If you want to bear fruit in the lives of others for eternity, it will take Jesus working through you. But he absolutely promises that he will as you stay connected with him. Thus your most important preparation is prayer. Prayer is how you remain connected with Jesus like a branch is connected to the vine. This includes prayer for yourself and for the people you are discipling.
Don’t be overwhelmed by the challenge of discipling others. You have many reasons to be hopeful and encouraged.
You have the training and resources found in the pursuegod.org library.
You have a mentor, small group leader, or coach who can help you along the way.
Your capacity will grow through preparation and experience.
Most importantly, God does great things through ordinary people who rely on him.
