Workshop Agenda:

In each session, watch the short video and break into groups to discuss. This will model the method in your training. Finish each session with Q&A led by a panel of mentors.

Session #1

Key Points:

  • Jesus came to the earth to help people pursue God, and his strategy was to empower generations to do it.
  • Jesus picked fishermen instead of Pharisees to make a point: regular people can do this. Matthew 4:19
  • The crowds had sermons, but they needed shepherds to disciple them. Matthew 9:36-37
  • Making disciples is a command, not a suggestion. Matthew 28:19-20

Talk About It
  1. What is your initial reaction to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. What do you think of when you hear the word “mentoring?” Have you ever had a mentor at school, in sports, or at work? Describe the relationship.
  3. Read John 1:43. Is it surprising to you that Jesus picked a bunch of fishermen as his closest disciples? Explain.
  4. Make a list of the activities you consider to be “normal” in the Christian life. Is disciple-making on that list? Have you actually ever done it?
  5. Read Matthew 28:19-20. Do you think the disciples felt qualified to become mentors? Do you feel qualified? Why or why not?
  6. Who personally helped you to pursue God? How did they do it?
  7. Write a personal action step based on this conversation.

Session #2

Key Points:

  • Disciple-making is simply a series of conversations, and our discipleship tracks provide a pathway for full circle faith.
  • Invite, invest, and empower to help people discover truth one conversation at a time.
  • God makes the seed of truth grow in the heart and mind of the seeker. 1 Corinthians 3:7

Talk About It
  1. What’s your initial reaction to this topic?
  2. Who first shared their faith with you? How did they go about it, and why was it helpful to you?
  3. Do you find sharing your faith difficult? Why or why not?
  4. Invite, Invest, Empower – which one seems the most difficult to you? Explain.
  5. Read 1 Corinthians 3:7. How do you see this principle at work in your own story of faith?
  6. Do you feel qualified to make disciples? If not, what would qualify you?
  7. Make a list of a few people who might be interested in going through this track with you. Begin praying for those people.

Session #3

Next Steps:

  1. Cover more training topics.
  2. Practice with the topics in this discipleship track.
  3. Pray for God to open a door for disciple-making.
  4. Follow up with your trainer after you’ve started discipling.

Talk About It
  1. What’s your initial reaction to this topic?
  2. Who in your life can you invite into a discipling relationship? Which discipleship track would be best for them?
  3. Read John 15:16. Do you think the disciples would have ever mobilized if Jesus hadn’t been so direct about it? Explain.
  4. Imagine that you’re discipling someone a year from now. What does your follow up relationship look like with your trainer? How often are you still connecting?
  5. What are some roadblocks that might keep you from helping someone pursue God? How can you eliminate those roadblocks?
  6. What are some training topics that you’d like to cover with your mentor?

Sample Email #3 - After Event

Our Training Workshop was awesome! Thanks for coming. Now let’s talk about next steps.

Remember that our goal for this event was to help you go “full circle” as a Christian by learning how to make disciples with the tools at We covered basic training topics, and it’s your job to complete The Pursuit with your training partner(s) over the next couple of months.

After you successfully complete the training, we’ll be ready to connect you to people from our church who need a mentor. We’re always talking about pursuing God with a mentor, because we want to generate life-giving relationships. The “handoff” process is important, and we want to make sure we connect each seeker with the right mentor. So this would be a good time to let us know more about you and the kinds of topics you’re most interested in talking about with others. Just hit “reply” to this email with that information.

Of course, you don’t have to wait for a handoff from us. Remember that there might be people in your home, neighborhood, or workplace that are interested in pursuing God with you one topic at a time. Remember this: Jesus wants all of us to get in the game and start making disciples. Let’s do it!
