Mentor Training
WorkshopThis 3-hour workshop is designed to help your church equip disciples who make disciples using the pursueGOD tools.
Workshop Agenda:
In each session, watch the short video and break into groups to discuss. This will model the method in your training. Finish each session with Q&A led by a panel of mentors.
Session #1
Key Points:
- Jesus came to the earth to help people pursue God, and his strategy was to empower generations to do it.
- Jesus picked fishermen instead of Pharisees to make a point: regular people can do this. Matthew 4:19
- The crowds had sermons, but they needed shepherds to disciple them. Matthew 9:36-37
- Making disciples is a command, not a suggestion. Matthew 28:19-20
Podcast:
- What is your initial reaction to this topic? What jumped out at you?
- What do you think of when you hear the word “mentoring?” Have you ever had a mentor at school, in sports, or at work? Describe the relationship.
- Read John 1:43. Is it surprising to you that Jesus picked a bunch of fishermen as his closest disciples? Explain.
- Make a list of the activities you consider to be “normal” in the Christian life. Is disciple-making on that list? Have you actually ever done it?
- Read Matthew 28:19-20. Do you think the disciples felt qualified to become mentors? Do you feel qualified? Why or why not?
- Who personally helped you to pursue God? How did they do it?
- Write a personal action step based on this conversation.
Session #2
Key Points:
- Disciple-making is simply a series of conversations, and our discipleship tracks provide a pathway for full circle faith.
- Invite, invest, and empower to help people discover truth one conversation at a time.
- God makes the seed of truth grow in the heart and mind of the seeker. 1 Corinthians 3:7
Podcast:
- What’s your initial reaction to this topic?
- Who first shared their faith with you? How did they go about it, and why was it helpful to you?
- Do you find sharing your faith difficult? Why or why not?
- Invite, Invest, Empower – which one seems the most difficult to you? Explain.
- Read 1 Corinthians 3:7. How do you see this principle at work in your own story of faith?
- Do you feel qualified to make disciples? If not, what would qualify you?
- Make a list of a few people who might be interested in going through this track with you. Begin praying for those people.
Session #3
Next Steps:
- Cover more training topics.
- Practice with the topics in this discipleship track.
- Pray for God to open a door for disciple-making.
- Follow up with your trainer after you’ve started discipling.
Podcast:
- What’s your initial reaction to this topic?
- Who in your life can you invite into a discipling relationship? Which discipleship track would be best for them?
- Read John 15:16. Do you think the disciples would have ever mobilized if Jesus hadn’t been so direct about it? Explain.
- Imagine that you’re discipling someone a year from now. What does your follow up relationship look like with your trainer? How often are you still connecting?
- What are some roadblocks that might keep you from helping someone pursue God? How can you eliminate those roadblocks?
- What are some training topics that you’d like to cover with your mentor?
Leader Notes
Putting on this workshop in your church? If so, then your goal should be to develop a list of mentors that you can deploy in the church. That’ll take some administrative skills and a heavy dose of intentionality. Feel free to customize and use the following email scripts as you lead the disciple-making charge in your church.
