Use this as a guide for creating posts for PursueGOD.org

Writing style

Write as though you are an Alpine small group leader or teacher. Try and avoid Christian cliches. If you have to use theological or technical words, please explain them. Also, write the article as though a person has not watched the video.

Article format

We have two article formats. One is a full article, and the other is a video highlight article. Each has its own purpose. The full article should be used when a video is longer than approximately four minutes in length or is detailed enough to merit elaboration. The video highlight article should be used when a video is shorter than approximately four minutes in length, is an interview or conversation, or is redundant without elaborating on new concepts. The video is full of examples but does not draw out explanations of main points. Please use the templates below and see the sample post for more ideas.

Sample: Is It Wrong for Christians to Drink Alcohol?

Opening paragraph

This needs to be catchy. Why should someone read this article? It should introduce the topic, demonstrate why it’s important, and somehow point to the fact that we are going to consider what God says on this issue.

Example: Anger happens. Someone flips you off on the road. Your spouse leaves out the milk all night. Your neighbor’s dog goes to the bathroom on your lawn. All of these situations and others like them tend to make us angry. But God shows us that we don’t have to be angry all the time. Use these four methods below to learn how to overcome this powerful emotion.

Article length

Articles should be about 450-650 words, and video highlight articles should be about 250-500 words. Don’t post full articles unless they hit 450 words, or video highlight articles unless they hit 250 words. Edit down articles that exceed 650 words. There is always room to edit. I do have one exception to the article length rule and that has to do with research articles. Research articles would include topics like: “What is Calvinism?” or many of the Bible project videos, like the Biblical Themes videos. People reading these articles are going to be willing to read something a little longer.

Theological Bias

As much as possible, point out when a topic is controversial among Bible-believing Christians. For example, if you are writing about Calvinism, don’t make it seem like Calvinism is the only option for a Jesus-loving Christian. At minimum, point out that other Christians believe other things on this issue. If you don’t know if something is controversial among Christians, ask me.

Related Topics

Related topics are inserted between paragraphs and surrounded by brackets. They link directly to the posts.

Excerpt

The post excerpt should be intriguing and not exceed 150 characters. Try and use different words than the words that are in the title of the post.

Example: Someone cuts you off. Your kids leave dirty laundry on the floor. We have lots of reasons to get angry, so let’s learn how to deal with this emotion.
